The Company

Open Book Extracts (OBX) is a sustainable, vertically-integrated hemp-derived cannabinoid company in the recently legalized U.S. hemp industry. The company possesses a strong leadership team with proven success in building high-growth mission-driven businesses. We have a co-op of 20 farmers covering 350 acres of farmland across NC, VA, CA and CO, and we are building a state-of-the-art 75,000 sf extraction and manufacturing facility in Roxboro, NC. Our core products and services will be bulk hemp-derived CBD (full-spectrum oil, broad-spectrum distillate, and isolate), pre-formulated products available for white labeling, and in-house formulation and packaging services for private label clients.

The Position

The Director of Sales is responsible for sales of CBD and white/private-label services to brands, CPGs, contract labs, and distributors. This position is responsible for driving growth, planning, forecasting, pricing, finished goods inventory turns, and sales administration. The director provides leadership and management and provides support to overall sales efforts of inside sales, key account managers and third-party sales.

We will consider candidates who live near a major airport.

Essential Functions

  • Manage annual sales volume of $75 million or greater. Responsible for the attainment of direct booking and sales goals.
  • Develop key market segmentation information, gather and analyze competitor product offering, pricing and go-to-market strategies.
  • Develop sales growth and market share targets; oversee and develop forecasting and budgeting.
  • Manage and work together with inside sales, key account managers and outside reps to develop and execute strategic sales plans.
  • Develop market-specific sales support tools, collaborate with product management and marketing services to devise pricing strategies and promotional activities.
  • Develop and execute successful strategies and objectives.
  • Develop relationships with industry leaders, customers and market influencers.
  • Understand and assess market product needs and work with customers and in-house product management to create new products and set product development strategy.
  • Launch new products.
  • Define, measure, establish and maintain positive customer relationships and high customer satisfaction. This includes making field visits to end users, distributors and prospective customers. Clearly communicate customer needs to management team.
  • Manage the sales cycle from design through to the issuance of either discrete purchase orders or the implementation of long-term supply contracts.
  • Set objectives, manage and evaluate the performance of regional managers and national account managers, and provide guidance and lead/coach.
  • Develop sales expense budgets to achieve targeted gross margins and product profitability.
  • Establish and maintain selling prices that reflect market requirements and opportunities, cost changes, and meet profit margin objectives.
  • Develop and maintain the sales toolbox, ensuring inside sales, key account managers and outside reps are efficient and persuasive in communicating the OBX capabilities and advantages.
  • Provide product training to inside sales, key account managers, outside reps, distributors and customers on a regular basis. Support OBX trade show participation and other promotional activity as needed.
  • Recruit, select, train, and coach a diverse team, supporting and incentivizing their success.
  • Develop and maintain a strong selling team culture across inside sales, key account managers and outside reps.
  • Manage reporting systems which includes but is not limited to sales activity and prospect reporting, pipeline management, quotes, CRM data, new customer, key account and lost order reporting.
  • Participate in and support the strategic and annual planning process. This includes analysis of industry and market data, competitor information, customer growth plans, accurate forecasting, etc.
  • Effectively manage key projects. Identify and maintain effective project management tools. Hold staff accountable for project commitments. Prioritize projects effectively. Meet deadlines.
  • Review and advise on legal documents, contracts, NDAs, etc.
  • Work with all levels at the customer and internally, communicating effectively to employees on the production line through to C-level executives.
  • Strict adherence to country laws and local market laws and practices up to and including employee policy and rules as defined in the OBX employee handbook

Supervisory Responsibility

This position is directly responsible for leading managers of the division and indirectly responsible for all employees within the division.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position, requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week, and regularly calling for longer and weekend hours, with frequent travel expected.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor?s degree (BS/BA) in sales, marketing or business administration, or related field a plus.

Masters degree in sales, marketing or business administration preferred.

Minimally 10+ years or related experience in positions of increasing responsibility.

5+ years of people management experience, including proven track record of developing direct and indirect reports.

National sales experience strongly preferred.

Ability to interface with customers, problem solve and drive solutions to meet customer requirements.

Strong track record of successful relationships at all levels, internally and externally.

Proven track record of growing sales and customer/business development.

Proven negotiation skills and strong business acumen.

Thorough understanding of sales and marketing practices and strategies for securing and growing market share.

Excellent computer systems skills which include: MS-Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), G-Suite (Sheets, Docs, Slides), Gmail, Google Drive; Experience with an ERP and CRM module preferred.
